So, it turns out Ethereum’s long and winding protocol roadmap could get a speed boost from AI. Who knew, right? Vitalik Buterin himself thinks that with the right tools, Ethereum’s big plans for the 2030s might just move faster than anyone had ever thought possible. And no, we’re not talking about magic here-just some clever AI tricks.
The inspiration came after a certain developer, Jiayao Qi, AKA YQ (you can check him out on X), unveiled a brainchild known as ETH2030. Now, don’t get too excited-this isn’t your average shiny new Ethereum client. No, no. This is an experimental Ethereum client designed to align with Ethereum’s “2030+” roadmap. And it’s a beast. We’re talking 702,000 lines of Go code, 65 items from the roadmap covered across 8 whole phases, and a whopping 36,126 official Ethereum state tests. Oh, and did I mention it syncs with mainnet through go-ethereum v1.17.0? Yeah, it does all that in roughly six days. Seriously. Six days.
The cost? Just a mere $5,750 and 2.77 billion tokens. For context, that’s about the price of a fancy dinner, minus the caviar. (If only it were that easy for all of us.)
AI Might Just Push Ethereum to the Finish Line Faster Than You Thought
Buterin, not one to shy away from a good experiment, called this whole thing “quite an impressive experiment.” But, of course, he couldn’t help but throw in a little dose of reality: “It’s fast, but we all know things built at breakneck speed come with a few (or many) hiccups.” He said, “Such a thing built in two weeks without even having the EIPs has massive caveats.” You don’t say, Vitalik. But hey, he acknowledged that just six months ago, this would have been borderline impossible. So, that’s progress, right?
What gets Vitalik’s gears grinding, though, isn’t just the demo, it’s the trend. AI could be the key to making Ethereum development both faster and more secure. Imagine AI cutting down development time, while at the same time beefing up security. “Half the gains in speed, half in security,” says Buterin. That’s how you make Ethereum a safer, faster monster of the blockchain world.
But don’t just take his word for it. Vitalik pointed to some formal verification work that’s happening around Ethereum. One of the Lean Ethereum collaborators managed to use AI to produce a machine-verifiable proof for STARK security. And that’s not all. AI is also helping to generate a lot more test cases, so we can be sure that everything works before it goes live.
ETH2030 itself isn’t exactly a candidate for production-don’t even think about using it as your Ethereum client just yet. No, it’s more of a stress test for the roadmap. Qi’s idea is to get the hard engineering questions out in the open now, rather than years from now, when it’s too late to ask them.
The roadmap in the project targets an Ethereum with over 10,000 TPS on L1, finality in mere seconds (not 15 minutes), solo staking for just 1 ETH, stateless nodes running on a cheap $7 Raspberry Pi, and over 1 million TPS across L1 and L2. Oh, and while that sounds all fine and dandy, ETH2030 has also revealed some very real problems. Like the fact that Go-based cryptographic implementations are about 10 to 100 times slower than production code. Oops. And that consensus logic hasn’t been battle-tested. Not exactly comforting, is it?
But don’t worry, Vitalik isn’t expecting AI to solve everything. He’s being honest about the challenges: “There WILL be lots of wrestling with bugs and inconsistencies between implementations,” he says. But hey, at least they’ll be wrestling faster and more thoroughly. You know, silver linings.
So, here’s the million-dollar question: can AI really make Ethereum’s roadmap a reality sooner than expected, with better security than we imagined? Well, Vitalik seems to think so. It might just be possible, but as he puts it, we should be “open to the possibility.” We all know what that means-don’t hold your breath, but don’t be surprised if it happens faster than you can say “blockchain.”
Oh, and just to add some cherry on top, at press time, ETH was trading at a cool $1,956. Not bad for a day’s work, right?
