In a tale as old as time-or at least as old as online dating-a 70-year-old man from Santa Rosa, California, has found himself in the unfortunate position of losing his entire life savings to what can only be described as “The Most Expensive Game of Love Ever.” And no, it’s not a new reality show.
Our unsuspecting hero, who wishes to remain anonymous (because who wants to be known as the guy who lost half a million bucks to a romance scam?), got caught up in a pig-butchering scheme. For those of you not well-versed in modern scams, this is where the fraudsters fatten you up with sweet nothings before they hoover up your cash like a vacuum cleaner at a yard sale.
He thought he was chatting up a lovely Finnish woman living in Florida (yes, that’s how it works these days). After a few months of what I’m sure were deeply meaningful conversations about life, love, and her aunt’s cryptocurrency empire, she convinced him that trading crypto was the key to their future together. Because nothing says romance like a joint venture in volatile digital currencies, right?
At one point, his account balance ballooned to $1 million, which is the kind of inflation I’d gladly welcome for my lunch budget. But just when he thought he could finally kick back and enjoy retirement, he was hit with a $100,000 capital gains tax bill. Surprise! It’s like being told you can’t have dessert after finishing your vegetables-only the vegetables are your hard-earned savings.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, so our protagonist took out loans to pay for his non-existent profits. Because if there’s one lesson to learn here, it’s that borrowing money to pay off a scam is definitely not a financial strategy I’d recommend. Spoiler alert: he eventually discovered that the crypto trading website was as real as unicorns and that, well-his funds were gone faster than a bad Tinder date.
